Giveaway Monday – Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide
This week I am excited to announce the giveaway of a signed copy of Rosemary Gladstar’s new book Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide!
This book is a wonderful starter book for anyone starting out with herbs, even kids and teens! The book is broken down into 4 chapters. The first chapter covers what medicinal herbs are, how they are used, what the benefits of herbal medicine are and starting your own herbal garden.
Chapter two dives into making herbal remedies. She covers what you’ll need to set up your own home pharmacy, the importance of labeling and how to make a variety of remedies including syrups, tinctures, herbal pills, bath items and salves.
The third chapter begins teaching you about herbs beginning with 9 familiar herbs and spices found in your kitchen. She talks about how to grow them and use them and offers recipes for each of the 9 herbs.
In the final chapter she expands the herbal learning into 24 easy to find and safe to use herbs including this month’s herb here at Herbal Roots zine: Oats.
Rosemary was one of my first formal teachers. Being in the midwest, I was unable to attend any formal training on location as there were no herbalists in my area and I did not have the ability to relocate. I discovered Rosemary’s home correspondence course and took it after several years of trying to learn about herbal medicine on my own (before the advent of the internet and all the wonderful resources that are now at our fingertips). Rosemary’s books and teachings are all down to earth, easy to understand and make learning about herbal medicine fun and engaging. My bookshelves are home to many of her books, including this one which my 14 year old daughter loves!

Rosemary Gladstar is a pioneer in the herbal movement and has been called the ‘godmother of American Herbalism’. She began over 35 years ago developing herbal formulas in her herb shop, Rosemary’s Garden in Sonoma County, California. She is the founder of the California School of Herbal Studies, the oldest running herb school in the United States, author of The Science and Art of Herbalism home study course, and is the organizer of the International Herb Symposium and The New England Women’s Herbal Conference held annually in NE. She is the author of numerous herb books including the best seller Herbal Healing for Women, The Storey Book Herbal Healing Series, Herbal Remedies for Vibrant Health, and the Science and Art of Herbalism, an extensive home study course. Rosemary is also the co-founder of Traditional Medicinal Tea Company and did all of the original formulations for the company. She has taught extensively throughout the United States and worldwide at venues as varied as backyard gardens, native villages, garden clubs to universities and hospitals. She has won numerous awards and certificates for her work with medicinal plants, but her greatest reward has been in watching the herbal renaissance soar from its birth and feeling in some small exciting way, a part of it.
Her greatest passion has been the work of United Plant Savers, a non profit organization that Rosemary founded in 1994 and is currently president of. UpS is dedicated to the conservation and cultivation of at risk North American medicinal plants and to preserving botanical sanctuaries across the U.S. to help preserve the land that these precious native species thrive on.
Rosemary lives and works from her home, Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center, a 500 acre botanical preserve in central Vermont.

I was in a bad auto accident, a lady ran a red light and now I have 3 hernia disc along with stenocias. Brain injuries. all my short term is gone. now being ad used to take flax seed, eat red salmons every day. take ginning liquids in a capsule. These items will generate brain cells. was advised will regain short term back but these 3 this.gs daily will regernate new brain cells. i’m opened for any advise. ok. Also now I have white spots on the brain which causes migraine headaches. everyday. I even wake up with them. But then I have to calm myself down. I had lots of wonderful lave der growing in herb garden but one of my neighbors complained. If only she had cared how long it takes to grow. I’ve recently (finally) been diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease + coinfections. I am on journey of healing, started with Western practices and am slowly working toward and integrating complementally alternative medicines.
