January 2011

The holiday season is over and we are deep into winter here in the Northern hemisphere. The chill in the air leaves me longing for warming herbs and turmeric fits that bill nicely!

Did you know this addition to curries is a traditional medicine that has been used for over 5,000 years? Ancient India used turmeric for inflammation and wound healing. They also used him for a dye.

This month’s issue has all sorts of fun activities including drying fresh turmeric, dying with turmeric, etching with turmeric and how to grow your own turmeric plant.

In the recipe section you’ll learn to make a turmeric paste, mix a traditional curry blend, make a turmeric tincture, make turmeric capsules and more!

And, we’ve added another section to Herbal Roots zine: Herb Spirits! This activity is geared to help you understand the herb on a more intimate level and gives you a whole new way to think about each herb. The activity is done twice during the use of each issue: once at the beginning before you start learning about the herb and the second time after you have finished the issue.
