Sea lions are such a curious little (or not so little) creature. They belong to a group of animals known as pinnipeds. Animals that are pinnipeds have a winged foot. There are 7 different species of sea lions. Males are known as bulls and females as cows. However, their babies are not called calves, they are called pups and a large group of sea lions is referred to as a colony.

Sea lions are great swimmers! They can dive up to 600 feet for food in the water and stay under the water for up to 40 minutes before they have to come up for air by pinching their nostrils shut. Though they can swim up to 25 miles per hour, they do have 2 predators: sharks and killer whales.

Sea lions typically live about 18 years in the wild though they have been known to live up to 23 years in captivity.
