Calendar Entry – May 4

After you’ve found some Nettles, harvest as much as you can and dry them! Nettles harvested now are the most nourishing.  If you have a lot of Nettles, you can lay them out on a sheet in the shade to dry outside. Once they are dried, store them in a glass jar away from heat and light.

Dried Nettles can be used in soups, casseroles, infusions and much more. To read up about some great uses, check out this month’s issue of Herbal Roots for just $7.99:

We found our patch yesterday and harvested lots of tops (sadly, most of them were getting ready to flower, so I think next year we’ll go collecting in late March/April). We’ve had them drying in a paper bag, but it looks like the weather might be good for drying outside as you suggest. I’ll have pictures and foraging notes to share on my blog tomorrow. 🙂
